Speedflip Resources
This is just some misc junk I found while trying to do speedflips.
Two Ways
AFAICT there are two ways to do speedflips.
- The "traditional" way, with a 30 degree diagonal flip immediately cancelled after some initial angle setup.
- The "easy" way, with DAR held and a 30 degree diagonal flip, holding the stick in the opposite direction instead (skipping setup).
I did not find the "easy" way any easier with my control scheme, but you may find otherwise.
The "traditional" way (no-DAR)
ApparentlyJack breaks down Speedflips step-by-step.
The "easy" way (DAR)
A REALLY easy way to speedflip with an explanation why it works : r/RocketLeagueSchool
So all you do at a kickoff is hold boost, drive and either ARL or ARL during the countdown. Then diagonally flip to the opposite side of your AR and then cancel straight down as fast as you can.
Something I didn't mention in my video: This works both ways.
Either you use air roll left and flip top right, which is equivalent to a normal speedflip that starts with a right jump and dodges top left.
Or you use air roll right and flip top left, which is equivalent to a normal speedflip that starts with a left jump and dodges top right. This is the version demonstrated in the video.
Here's an example of it in game. Disregard that no-one else even flipped. I hardly play Rumble so my opponents were probably low ranked. https://imgur.com/jWNkCzE

Make sure you disable BakkesMod Shuffling / Mirroring / etc, or it'll mess with the pack.
Misc Tips
My advice would be to cancel faster (crazy right?).
But I mean really exaggerate it.
Try to cancel so fast you end up back flipping instead.
Most people avoid this because it's a worse outcome, but if you are always slow, it's harder to work your way down.
If you are missing in both directions (too fast and too slow), you will find the sweet spot a lot sooner.
Some more advice on how to get quicker flip cancels. A strategy I've used to get flip cancels between 20ms and 50ms is this order of operations:
Do the turn necessary for speedflipping (aiming the car to flip)
Move stick in correct direction to dodge (~30° to the side)
Once stick is in that spot, begin to move the stick downwards.
Press the dodge button.
The reason why this works is because the "dodge deadzone". If your dodge deadzone is at 0.50, your controller requires a 50% input in a direction to dodge. That means you can move your stick to the maximum, then move it away and still be able to flip as long as you don't go under 50% input before you dodge.
I have a really high dodge deadzone at 0.80 (80%), so a high dodge deadzone doesn't make it impossible or too difficult to do.
Additional note: Even if you don't manage to move the stick before you dodge, your thumb on the analog stick should already be "primed" to move (every motion your body does has a preparation motion). This would still manage to make flip cancels easier to cancel quicker.
Here is a video I made to try and help people figure this out, check out this comment for my keybinds and other info.
In the video you'll notice how quick I make the movements on my stick, I also slow down the video to try and show the movements, but I'll try to explain them here.
(This is for the left flip, do opposite movements if you're flipping to the right)
-
(wait for wheels to touch the ground) Hold Boost
-
Hold Accelerate (I don't use it in the video but in a normal game you wold hold it)
-
Move my car slightly to the right
-
Move my stick to the top left corner.
-
Jump as soon as my stick is in the top left corner.
-
As soon as I jump, pull my stick straight down.
-
Jump again as soon as my stick is down.
-
Press Air Roll after jumping and rotate my stick clockwise.
Step 1 and 2 are for the training pack only as this ensures you're hitting boost before accelerate and that your wheels are touching the ground before you boost, in a normal game this wouldn't be an issue since there is a 3 second countdown.
Start to flick down before the dodge.
Basicslly pull down and dodge.
It will still be a front diagonal dodge because you have your stick above the deadzone , but it'd already moving down so it's much easier to get to the cancel quicker.
Also check your dodge deadzone, very high is easier to not accidentally mess up fast aerials but makes cancels much harder.
It pays off to learn to become accurate and not mess up fast aerials since as you progress in the game it's all about precision and very small adjustments.
So it's better to learn now
Given you have the speedflip trainer plugin turn it on try this (this worked for me almost instantly):
-
Forget about the diagonal flip initially. Just practice forward flip cancelling within 50ms (I also held down boost while doing this). Use the sound of the thumbsticks and the button to guide your memorisation (this is what did it for me).
-
I find it much easier if my left thumb is lower down on the stick, not perfectly on the stick. It allows a ‘snappy’ motion (which you want). My controller is one of those new Xbox controllers which have hard border around thumb stick, this probably helps.
-
Just keep doing this until you can get <75ms most of the time.
Also just note it’s not critical to get <50ms, but definitely aim for it since it gives you wiggle room. I frequently hit the speedflip even with 100ms. I made a post where I hit one with 456ms, although this was quite out of the ordinary.
BTW, check my post here (IGNORE everything before “EDIT”). There’s a simple way to speedflip where you never actually turn. You just hold DAR right the whole time and diagonal flip cancel left.
In fact, I might upload audio of what it sounds like when I flip
I feel your struggle. This is what clicked for me when I was practicing my speedflips which I feel like doesn't get talked about enough.
The cancel is the ONLY part of the speedflip that needs to be executed extremely fast. When you press your flip button get that joystick to the cancel position at the same time/just barely after you press it. Everything else can be done at a normal human pace which will get faster when you get smoother. I feel like the assumption is always that you need to fly through all these movements asap which in turn makes everything sloppy and slow. Focus your burst of speed on the cancel.
Personally, I had to use my gamepad wired or the cancel was never fast enough.
For my gamepad, there seemed to be some variance in input delay, which was enough to flub almost every flip.
Wired, I got the cancel almost every time.
Personally, I had to reset my gamepad's calibration, or the cancels didn't work right.
My calibration was inconsietent, and not circular. Not sure how that happened, but it was relatively simple to fix.

Deadzone also may work kinda strangely

In reality, it's even easier because the dodge deadzone is additive between the X and Y axis. Meaning if you have 0.4 input up and 0.4 input sideways, the game registers it as 0.80 input and will dodge you. Meaning at a 0.80 deadzone with an 11 o'clock dodge, you can pull your stick back to like 0.60 (60%) forward and 0.40 sideways (40%) and still get a dodge. Allowing your stick to be even closer to the flip cancel point, making the travel time sooner to the flip cancel.
